Rangamati Correspondent :
Though 16 per cent babies of Rangamati district are born at the hands of trained midwives, the remaining 84 per cent are born at the hands of unskilled ones. Though the similar figure is noticed in Khagrachhari district, but in Bandarban district, the figure is terrible. Less than three per cent babies are born at the hands of trained midwives while 97 per cent are born at the hands of unskilled ones.
The figure has been surfaced in the district profile of ‘Children in Bangladesh’ published by UNICEF recently. In the profile, separate figures of each 64 district have been focused. In the profile, the figures of 2006 have been highlighted, but in the last 10 years, there have been no changes in this case.
While asked about the lack of the required services during childbirth here, some affected people and officials of concerned departments informed that the healthcare system in union and upazila levels of the three hill districts is plagued with manifold problems. There is hardly any opportunity for safe childbirth in union and upazila levels. Since there is no training facility on midwifery; the childbirth is being done by the unskilled midwives in most of the cases.
Besides the crisis during childbirth, other figures including breastfeeding within one hour of childbirth and within next two years, have also been highlighted in the UNICEF report. According to the report, the figure in case of Rangamati district is 63 per cent, in Bandarban 57 per cent, and in Khagrachhari 71 per cent.
But, the picture of malnutrition and low weight among babies is not optimistic. In this case, the figure in Rangamati is 47 per cent, 33 per cent in Bandarban, and 35 per cent in Khagrachhari district.
Meanwhile, the vaccination rate among babies from 12 to 23 months in the the three hill districts is also downward. In comparison to the figures of 2009, the ones during the following years have come down gradually. In 2009 the vaccination rate among babies in Rangamati was 76 per cent, but now it has come down to 68 per cent.
The same downward trend is also noticed in the other two districts.
