The Election Commission (EC) has launched an online National Identity Card (NID) related service during the epidemic for the benefit of the citizens.
The online service was launched on May 16, 2020. Since its inception, about 8.4 million people have registered online for the service, EC sources said.
According to sources, 83, 71,565 people had registered for online NID-related services till Tuesday (July 27).
Sources further said that 813087 people applied to become new voters at this time. About 6, 35,606 people have applied for correction. The lost NID has been re-collected by 2, o8, 873 people and 50, 32, 289 people have been downloaded NID by own from online. At this time, a total of 66, 89, 855 people have taken the service online.
Md Nuruzzaman Talukder, Director (Operations) of EC’s NID wing said even amid of the lockdown announced by the government, we are providing NID-related services to the citizens. In order to ensure that the promised gift of the Prime Minister is delivered to millions of people properly, the worksheet from the Prime Minister’s Office has decided that those who should get this gift should get it.
He said during the Coronavirus period, many of our officers were infected with Covid-19 while continuing their NID-related service activities and some of them died due to novel coronavirus.
According to EC sources, 172 EC officials and employees were affected by Covid-19 till July 26. Of these, 85 have recovered, 84 are receiving treatment at home and 24 are receiving treatment in the hospital. Eight people, including a regional election officer, a senior district election officer and two upazila election officers died.
For any information regarding NID services, citizens can visit this web site www.nidw.gov.bd. They have to go to the site and apply for the desired service by registering as per the rules.
According to the EC, the number of the total voters is 111,720,669, of which 56,598,005 (50.66 pc) are males, 55,122,223 females (49.33 pc) and 441 transgender ones – in the country.
Initially NID cards related services such as lost of NID cards and correction were free. From 1st September 2015, EC started to charge for NID cards related services.
