84 Hajj agencies fined Tk 3.5cr

The Religious Affairs Ministry on Thursday fined 84 Hajj agencies Tk 3.5 crore for different anomalies, including involvement in human trafficking and failure in providing information about 751 pilgrims who obtained visas to perform Hajj in 2016.
The Ministry also cancelled the license of one of these companies and fined it after allegations against it were proved beyond doubt.
The action was taken based on reports submitted by two committees which
investigated anomalies. The government formed the enquiry committees after receiving the allegations.
According to office orders of the Ministry, allegations were directed against 113 hajj agencies for not providing information about 751 pilgrims.
Then the Ministry formed a three-member inquiry committee to investigate this allegations. Another inquiry committee of five member was formed to investigate some other allegations about some other Hajj agencies.
Basis on the reports of the enquiry committees, 57 agencies were fined Tk 1.45 crore for not providing information to Hajj Management and Information System (HMIS) about pilgrims who obtained visas.
Besides, 27 Hajj agencies were fined Tk 2.06 crore after the ministry probe bodies found them involved in various anomalies including trafficking.
The Ministry warned 21 agencies and released 81 agencies from the allegations.
The probe committees asked the Hajj agencies to deposit their fines to the government exchequer through treasury chalans.
