Eighty three primary schools are running their academic activities in old and worn-out buildings in nine upazilas of the district, putting lives of child learners at risk. Although the application for the construction of new school buildings and the repair of old vulnerable buildings was submitted, but did not get the allotment.
As a result, the teaching process is running with fear of accident in the non-reformed risky building. Meanwhile, District Primary Education Office has announced around 83 schools in the district as risky.
Meanwhile, plaster have dropped out from the beam of some school buildings, roof concrete broke down in the classroom. And there has no door and windows of some schools.
Students of Shalbon Shishu Kalyan Primary School of District Sadar said that, due to the big hole on the roof of the tin, they have more difficulty in doing class during rainy season.
Apart from this, the school building which was built near hillside is also in a very risky condition, said school teachers and locals. They are afraid of any major accident at any time. Guardians are very concerned about this situation.
Md. Kamrul Islam, guardian of a student of Shalbon Shishu Kallyan Primary School said, “Like others, I have become nervous after the school building was damaged and declared unusable.”
The situation is frustrating because we do not know when new buildings will be constructed,” he addaed.
The headmaster of DP Para Government Primary School of Matiranga upazila Zainal Abedin said, “There is a crack in every room in the school building. The plaster has dropped and roof rods are visible.”
Belal Ahmed, headmaster of Karaillachhari Government Primary School of the same upazila said, “Among the five classrooms of the school, three are quite worn-out. Affright of building collapse, regular learning is being interrupted.”
Khagrachhari District Primary Education Officer Fatema Meher Yasmin said, “About 83 schools in the district are hazardous. Meanwhile, some schools have been allocated for the reformation.”
If the allotment got, the renovation work for the rest of the schools will start, she added.
