Eighty-two leaders and activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir [ICS] were arrested from the dormitories of Chittagong Government College and its adjacent Government Haji Muhammad Mohsin College when police conducted two separate raids on Wednesday.
Police also recovered huge quantity of arms and ammunitions during the nightlong drives. About 150 members of law enforcing agencies cordoned the entire Chittagong College on Tuesday midnight and the drive continued till early morning.
The second drive began at Mohsin College at 8:00am and it continued till noon.
In the first operation, the law enforcers led by Detective Branch [DB] of Chittagong Metropolitan Police [CMP] detained 72 suspected leaders and activists of ICS from Suhrawardy Hall of Chittagong College.
During the drive, police conducted room-to-room search of the hostels. At one stage, police recovered one AK-22 semi-automatic rifle, a three knot three [.303] rifle, three pistols, three single barrel guns, three country-made guns, a double-barrel rifle, five rocket flares, 61 cartridges and 25 rounds of bullets from Suhrawardy Hall premises. “The arms and ammunitions were stored under ground near the student’s hall. Police had information that some people were gathering with huge arms and ammos inside the campus to carry out sabotages,” said Abdul Jalil Mondal, Commissioner [DB] of CMP.
He said, “The detained Shibir activists have been accommodated in Panchalaish and Kotwali thana custody.”
In the second drive, the police further detained ten leaders and activists of ICS in another drive conducting at Government Haji Mohammad Mohsin College yesterday morning.
Of the detainees, nine Shibir activists were picked up from hillocks inside Mohsin College and one from its New Hostel.
Police also conducted a drive at Sramik Kalyan Federation office and nabbed Baitul Maal Secretary and seized some replicas of firearms and some documents.
Police said the Chittagong College and Mohsin College hostels are usually dominated by Islami Chhatra Shibir.
Eight Shibir activists were found hiding in a 100-feet deep cave on the hills around the campus in the Mohsin College.
Police also raided the office of another Jamaat affiliated organization and nabbed Treasurer Abdul Wadud hiding inside the locked room.
Detective Branch Assistant Commissioner Dipak Jyoti Khisha said they seized some books of war crimes convict Delwar Hossain Sayedee and documents of Articles of Association of the Jamaat-e-Islami.
Six-member probe body for arms recovery
A 6-members probe committee headed by Professor of Chemistry department of Ctg college Shaheda Islam has been formed by the college authority to investigate the recovery of arms and arrest of 72 shibir activists from the college campus.
“The authority has asked the committee to submit the enquiry report within 3 days,” said Principal of the college Jesmin Akhter.
Teachers involved with storing arms: CMP Commissioner
Commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police [CMP] Abdul Jalil Mondal said, legal actions will be taken against the teachers and masterminds who are involved with the storing of huge quantity of arms, ammos in the Shibir dominated Chittagong Government College and Government Mohsin College campuses.
CMP Commissioner said the matter of storing arms inside the class rooms and hostels is not unknown to the teachers and without the cooperation of teachers; students can never store the arms. He said an immediate enquiry should be undertaken to detect the real culprits and no educational institutions can run like this.
Police commissioner mentioned that these two govt colleges are the cantonment of Shibir and operation of the police will continue till detecting of the real criminals and recovery of all sorts of weapons from the campus.
