All sorts of vessels’ movements have remained suspended at the Munshiganj’s Shimulia and Madaripur’s Kathalbari ferry ghats due to adverse weather, rough waves and high current since Wednesday noon. As a result, thousands of vehicles have been trapped at Shimulia ferry ghat.
The river of Padma has been rough after rise of water level and the strong current supported by fierce wind and high waves.
Local sources said that the ferry operations remained shut for six hours since Tuesday midnight after the ramps of both ghats were damaged by the rough waves. However the operations resumed around 6:00am after the damage was repaired on Wednesday morning, but the operation was suspended again around 1:15pm after ghat no. 3 went under water and the other ferries could not operate due to the roughness of the river.
Even, movement of vessels including launches and speedboats have also remained suspended for the same reason since Wednesday.
Over 800 light and heavy vehicles, including around 50 passenger coaches, have been stranded at Shimulia.
Meanwhile thousands of passengers were going through enormous sufferings after waiting for the ferry operations to resume till filing of this report around 8:00pm.
