Staff Reporter :At least 80 shanties burnt down in the city’s Tejgaon and Mohammadpur area on Wednesday.According to the Fire Service control room, A fire at a slum gutted at least 50 shanties in the city’s Tejgaon Industrial area at around 4:30 PM in the afternoon.Originating from a slum besides BG Press School and sounded other shanties, the fire speeded rapidly to other shanties causing huge amount of losses to the ultra poor slum dwellers.Ten fire-fighting units went to the spot and brought the fire under control at around 5:12 PM.Assistant Director (Dhaka District) of Fire Service, Masudur Rahman said the fire might have originated due to electric short circuit. The fame was doused around 6:30 PM. Besides, another fire broke out at a slum next to Dhaka Uddyan Housing in the city’s Mohammadpur burning 30 shanties early on the day.The fire originated from a shanty and then it spread to some other small makeshift houses one after another around 1:20 PM, according to Fire Service office.”Being informed, six fire fighting units went to the spot and doused the flame around 3:30 PM,” an assistant director of the department said.According to him, the shanties were built illegally on the land of Water Development Board. 30 shanties burnt down in the incident. However, no causality was reported in none of the incidents.
