Eighty percent of girl children in slums in the capital are falling victims to early marriage. On the other hand, the rate of early mirage among the slum boys is 46 percent, according to two study reports released by Save the Children in the city.
The study reports were presented at a function at Gulshan Spectra Centre. AKM Fazlur Rahman presented a study report on “Trend of Urbanization and Impact on Children” while Dr. Shana Naznin presented the other report titled “Analysis of the Situation in Five Selected Slums.” Save the Children Country Director Michael McGrath, Deputy Country Director Kazi Gias Uddin and Education Director Elizabeth Pears also spoke on the occasion. Bangladesh Urban Forum (BUF) National Policy Adviser moderated the function.
The study reports highlighted the hindrances faced the families living in slums and what the local and international agencies can do development of the families.
The study report on “Trend of Urbanization and Impact on Children” says 44 percent of slum children work in garment factories, 24 percent in shops and nine percent involved in begging.
