The Election Commission (EC) yesterday declared as many as 80 nominations valid and rejected 77 after hearing review petitions filed by aggrieved candidates whose nominations were initially rejected by the election officials during scrutiny.
BNP’s heavyweight candidates Mir Mohammad Nasiruddin (Chattogram-5), Ruhul Kuddus Talukdar Dulu (Natore-2) and Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku’s (Sirajganj-2) nominations were rejected by the EC.
During hearing, Nasir’s appeal was rejected for conviction in a lawsuit, Dulu in two criminal cases while Tuku in a corruption case.
On the first day, the Commission heard 160 petitions. Of them, 80 were approved, 78 rejected and two others remained pending, said the Commission’s Joint Secretary (Public Relation) SM Asaduzzaman.
“The three pending appeals will be resolved by Saturday,” he added.
UNB adds: The 80 aspirants who got back their candidatures include BNP’s 39, AL’s 1, Jatiya Party’s 8, Gano Forum’s 1, LDP’s 2, Zaker Party’s 6, NPP’s 1, Bangladesh Islami Front’s 2, Islami Oikyajote’s 2, Bangladesh Muslim League’s 1, Islami Andolan Bangladesh’s 2, Muslim League’s 2 and independent 13.
On completion of the first-day hearing, BNP got back their single candidates in four constituencies-Bogura-7, Jamalpur-4, Manikganj-2 and Dhaka-1 – after the Election Commission cleared its aspirants’ candidature for the parliamentary seats.
The Commission started its three-day hearing at 10am on Thursday over petitions filed against the decision for the returning officers over the rejection and acceptance for nomination papers in different constituencies.
Now, BNP’s valid contestants for the four constituencies are Morshed Milton for Bogura-7, Faridul Kabir Talukder (Shamim) for Jamalpur-4, Abidur Rahman Khan for Manikganj-2 and Khandaker Abu Ashfaq for Dhaka-1.
Ruling Awami League fielded no candidate for 36 constituencies, while BNP for five parliamentary seats in the 11th national election slated for December 30.
During Sunday’s scrutiny of nomination papers by the returning officers, all BNP aspirants lost their candidature in six constituencies-Sunamganj-3, Manikganj-2, Jamalpur-4, Pabna-1, Bogura-7 and Dhaka-1, while AL aspirants in three constituencies-Kurigram-4, Satkhira-1 and Narayanganj-3.

The EC turned down some 75 petitions filed to get back their candidatures, while it dismissed two other petitions submitted seeking the scrap of candidature.
Of them, the heavyweight aspirants include BNP’s Mir Mohammad Nasir for Chattogram-5, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud for Sirajganj-2, Ruhul Kuddus Talukder Dulu for Natore-2, Sabira Sultana for Jashore-2, Abdul Wadud Bhuiyan for Khagrachhari, Towhidul Islam for Panchagarh-1 and AKM Mahbubur Rahman for Bogura-6.
The EC will dispose of 150 petitions on Friday and the remaining 233 will be sorted out on Saturday.
