UNB, Dhaka :
Generation of some 70-80 MW of electricity from the wastes of both the Dhaka cities is possible, according to a presentation. Siddique Zobair, member of the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (Sreda) and joint secretary at the Power Division, made the presentation on the potential of power generation
from the garbage of the capital at Power Division on Thursday. He said the entire capital regularly generates about 4500-5000 metric tons of garbage every day. He said most of the garbage contain organic and solid materials which could be used for power generation. The dry digestion system could be used for turning wastes into power. The Power Division convened the meeting to discuss a proposal for generating power from wastes.
Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Anisul Haque, Chittagong City Corporation Mayor AZM Nasir Uddin, Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Dr Selina Hayat Ivy and other top officials of Power Division and different city corporations attended the meeting.
Addressing the meeting, State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid welcomed all and laid upmost emphasis on power generation
from garbage to save the city, especially Dhaka city which has been over crowded. He said the waste management has been a crucial issue for the city to save its environment. Power generation from wastes could be a very effective option, he opined. Nasrul said the cost of power generation from wastes could be higher. Even then such initiative should be made successful in the greater interest of the city, he added. Supporting the idea of power generation from the waste, the city corporation mayors extended their full support to such initiatives. They expressed their interest to be part of such drives.
