Customs officials in a drive seized 80 gold bars weighing 9.3 kilograms worth around Tk 4.5 crore inside a Bangladesh Biman Airlines at MAG Osmani International Airport in Sylhet early Wednesday.
They could not detain anybody in connection with seizure of the unclaimed gold haul, Customs official said.
Sazzad Hossain, Assistant Commissioner (Immigration) of Airport Customs House, told The New Nation on Wednesday night, “A team of Customs detectives led by him conducted a drive at the Flight ‘BG-224’ of Bangladesh Biman Airlines from Dubai landed at the airport around 6:15am and recovered the gold bars.”
The gold bars were found inside four bags wrapped up with some pieces of paper under two VIP seats of the flight, the Customs official said.
The smugglers used Sylhet as their route and they might have been trying to transport the shipment to somewhere else using domestic flights, he said.
 “We were investigating into the matter as it was the biggest haul so far of gold at the airport, the Customs official added.
A case has been filed with the police station in this connection.
