A total of eight teams will take part in the Fortune Tour de Bangladesh Cycling Race competition which begins from Tuesday (December 20) at Bagerhat district.
Dr Mozammel Hossain, chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Affairs Ministry, is expected to be present at the inaugural ceremony as chief guest. Bangladesh Cycling Federation (BCF) general secretary Imtiaz Khan will also be present at the ceremony.
The information was disclosed to BSS by BCF general secretary Imtiaz Khan Babul, who is also the Deputy Secretary General of Bangladesh Olympics Association at BCF office on Saturday afternoon.
The eight participating teams are Bangladesh Army, Bangladesh Ansar, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), BJMC, Bangladesh Jail, Bagerhat DSA, Gopalganj DSA and Dinajpur DSA. Each team will consist of six cyclists and three officials.
This extraordinary competition is the joint initiative of Bangladesh Edible Oil Limited (BEOL) and Bangladesh Cycling Federation (BCF).
Titled Fortune Tour de Bangladesh, this cycling race will feature around 40 of the best cyclists from all over the country, all registered under the BCF, who will be competing for ten teams, including teams from districts, services and armed forces.
A three-year venture initially, the first edition will be held on December 20, 21 and 23 and will cover an area of approximately 194 kilometre.
This maiden competition will be held over three days and over three legs: the first leg of the 55 km race will start from Bagerhat and finish at Gopalganj on December 20, followed by an 84 km race from Gopalganj to Kotaripara via Tongipara on the following day (December 21).
After a rest day, the last stage on December 23 will be marked by a 49-kilometer race by circling Dhaka’s Hatirjheel seven times. Even though the cyclists will represent teams, they will be awarded based on individual performances with Taka 3,00,000, Taka 2,00,000 and Taka 1,00,000 for the top
three finishers and Taka 25,000 each for the next seven finishers and there will be monetary awards based on each day’s performance.
Veteran organizer and new youth and sports secretary of Awami League Harun-ur-Rashid is expected to be present on the closing day of the competition.
