Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) has made a significant progress in innovating eight new rice varieties tolerant to adverse climatic conditions.
Of the varieties, OM1490 variety, collected from Vietnam, is a lineal row and was developed in the institute suitable for cultivation in Bona Aus season while BR7611-31-5-3-2 lineal row is for cultivation during the Ropa Aman season.
HUA565 variety, collected from China, is for Ropa Aman while IR82635-B-B-75-2 variety, collected from IRRI, is for Ropa Aman. BR7830-16-1-5-3 variety is a lineal row and suitable for cultivation during the Boro season.
Another variety of rice collected from China has not been named yet while BR7100-R-6-6 and IR78794-B-SAT29-1 varieties are awaiting release from National Seed Board.
The scientists have developed the modern varieties to survive the stresses like salinity, submergence, drought and adverse climatic conditions, said Dr Jiban Krishna Biswas, Director General of BRRI.
The rice varieties are innovated from the lineal row, and the new varieties will help increase rice production in Bangladesh, he said.
The success achieved in last few years is such significant Dr Jiban told The New Nation. The rice research institute is now going ahead with a radical idea of developing a new rice plant type with ‘cluster grains’ panicles, DG BRRI said.
The new plants are expected to bring about 20-25 percent yield improvement over the existing modern varieties.
About 100 tonnes of breeder seeds per year are produced and supplied to different seed-producing agencies for further multiplication and dissemination at farm level.
