Eight members of a family were burned in a gas line blast at a house of Konapara’s Al-Amin Road in the city’s Demra in the wee hours of Monday.
The fire incident took place on the second floor of the residence at about 3:30 am when victims were sleeping, Fire Service official said.
The victims are tenant Alamgir Hossain, 45, his wife Ferdousi Begum, 25, their three children Emon, 15, Shipon, 12, and Tafin, 12, Alamgir’s nephew Tofail, 24, his wife Ratna Begum, 19, and their relative Arif, 35.
Locals brought the eight victims to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital earlyMonday, said DMCH Police Outpost Sub-Inspector (SI) Bachchu Miah.
Ratna suffered burns on 46 percent of her body, Shipon on 20 percent, Arif 15 percent, Alamgir eight percent, Emon four percent, Tafin four percent, Tofail nine percent and Ferdousi six percent, said the police official quoting doctor.
Ferdousi told police that she woke up after hearing the screams of the children and saw the fire. The neighbours helped rescue them.
The fire might have been originated from a leaked gas pipe around 3:30am, said Fire Service Control Room official Ataur Rahman.
Though a Fire Service unit moved fast to the scene, locals had doused the fire before hand, he said.
