Eight people, including two children, were killed in a siege which lasted more than six hours at the Kabul home of Afghan parliamentarian Mir Wali, an official said Thursday.
The siege, which began when three Taliban militants stormed Wali’s house, ended when the
assailants were killed by members of the Police Crisis Response Unit.
‘Two of Mir Wali’s grandchildren, his nephew and the son of a public representative from southern Oruzgan province, are among those killed,’ said Faraidon Obaidi, head of Kabul Police Criminal Investigation Department. Two of Wali’s bodyguards and two guests were also among the dead, police spokesman Basir Mujahid told dpa. Six others, including the parliamentarian’s wife, were wounded, Obaidi said.
Wali, who represents the embattled southern Helmand province, escaped the house in the Kabul neighbourhood of Police District 5 with minor injuries, Obaidi added. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack saying it was launched because ‘important military personnel especially military commanders from Helmand had gathered for a key meeting.’ The spokesman said at least 20 ‘gunmen and key personnel’ were killed, however the Taliban are known to exaggerate casualty numbers. In June, an Afghan member of parliament was killed by bomb which was placed near his house by the Taliban.
