Eight persons died after a fire broke out at a restaurant in Kurla on Friday afternoon. The restaurant ‘Hotel City Kinara’, a Chinese food joint, is located some distance away from the Kurla railway station.
DCP Mahesh Patil said, “Today at Kurla about 13:00 hrs, fire broke out in Hotel City Kinara, in front of Holy Cross Church.” He added,” 8 people are dead and bodies sent to Rajawadi Hospital. Fire engines are on the spot and inquiry is in progress.”
An officer said that prima facie it appears to be a case of short circuit that led to the incident.
Police said only 1 person among the 8 dead have been identified. The bodies of seven men and one
woman, who were seated in the family room of the restaurant on the first floor, were found, officials added.
“We suspect there was a gas leak on the first floor along with a short circuit that led to a blast. Those on the first floor got trapped over there and could not rush down where there was no damage,” said ACP Srirang Nadgouda. “We suspect there were one or two waiters and rest of them customers who lost their lives.”
