BCC election: 8 including AL , BNP candidates for mayor , 152 for councillor candidates submit nomination

Eight including AL, BNP, BSD, CPB, IAB, KM, JaPa, JaPa(rebel) candidates for Mayorship and 152 including 114 for general and 38 for reserved female councilor candidates submitted nomination papers in fourth BCC election 2018 on Thursday.
Mujibur Rahman, Regional Election Officer and returning officer for BCC election 2018, confirmed the report.
The eight mayoral candidates were Serniabad Sadik Abdullah, city AL joint secretary from AL, Mojibor Rahman Sarwar, city president and central joint secretary from BNP, Dr. Manisha Chakraborty, district member secretary of Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal, A K Azad, district CPB president, Mawlana Obaidur Rahman Mahbub, city president of Islami Andolon Bangladesh, Iqbal Hossain Tapos, central body member and businessmen of Jatiya Party (Ershad), Bashir Ahmed Jhunu (rebel) from JaPa, Prof. AKM Mahbub Alam, city secretary of Khelafat Majlis, submitted nomination papers for BCC mayorship, EC sources said.
Besides 114 candidates for 30 general councilor and 38 for 10 reserved female councilor seats also submitted their nomination forms before EC.
Mujibur Rahman, returning officer of BCC election 2018 told BCC has 40 including 10 reserved for females and 30 for general councilors at 30 wards in 58 square kilometer areas.
At present number of voters reached to 2, 42,166 including 121436 male and 120730 female voters, he said.
According to announced schedule scrutiny of submitted nomination papers on 1st and 2nd July, appeal against decision of EC on 3rd to 5th and verdict against appeal 6th to 8th July, withdrawal of nomination paper on 9th July and distribution of symbols on 10th July and voting would be held on July 30.
Before distributing election symbols, candidates could not propagate officially.
AL Mayor candidate Sadik Abdullah claimed Khulna and Gazipur city corporation elections were free and fair and BCC election would be like that.
He has no separate manifesto for the election except development of the citizens, Sadik, who is competing for the first time in public election, said.
On other hand BNP candidate Mojibor Rahman Sarwar alleged that present government trying to conduct ‘controlled’ electioneering like Khulna and Gazipur using government machinery including law enforcing agencies. Even after that BNP participating in election to flash the actual scenario before the national international arena.
Sarwar called the ruling government to conduct a free fair and impartial election creating level playing field.
After enacting BCC act on April 4, 2001, Barishal divisional headquarter and municipality promoted to City Corporation on July 25, 2002.
Mojibor Rahman Sarwar was first elected Mayor of BCC in the election of 20 March 2003. However he was arrested by military backed caretaker government before completing his tenure as BCC Mayor.
AL backed candidate Shawkat Hossain Hiron elected as second BCC Mayor by defeating BNP backed candidate Sarfuddin Ahmed Sentu with a margin of few hundred votes in election held on August 4, 2008.
Ahsan Habib Kamal, former municipal member, acting mayor, defeating Shawkat Hossain Hiron, elected as third Mayor of BCC in the election of June 15, 2013.
EC sources said if Kamal would not compete in next Mayoral election, then he could run till handover the charges to newly elected Mayor.
Mentionable number of voters in last BCC election were 2, 11,257 including 1, 03,632 females and 1, 07, 625 males.
Total 3 candidates for one Mayor, 45 for 10 reserved female councilors and 116 for 30 general councilor posts competed in last BCC election .
