UNB, Dhaka :
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has asked eight foreign diplomatic missions in Dhaka to move their security checkpoints from the footpath into their own compounds with a view to freeing up the space for pedestrians.
The embassies or high commissions of the USA, Italy, Germany, Canada, France, the UK, Australia and Turkey, all located in the Gulshan-Baridhara diplomatic enclave, were sent letters to that effect, signed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the DNCC. They have been requested to remove the security posts immediately, said DNCC’s public relations officer Md. Monzur-E-Mowla.
The DNCC decision comes in the wake of President of Gulshan society Dr ATM Shamsul Huda, sending an application to the DNCC mayor Annisul Huq on December 15 last year to remove illegal structures from the footpaths of Gulshan area.
In his application, the president of the Gulshan Society mentioned that the High Court Division on February 11 in 2001 in a verdict directed the then undivided Dhaka City Corporation’s Mayor to remove illegal establishments from the footpaths of Dhaka city as well as to open those for smooth movement of pedestrians.
