Eight fishermen were sentenced to one-year imprisonment for catching hilsa in the Meghna River on Thursday defying an ongoing ban on netting hilsa.
The convicts are Ripon Patwary, 22, Rahim Sheikh, 35, Masud Patwary, 30, Chunnu Miah, 25, Fazlu Miah, 36, Hanif Saiyal, 22, Md Sharif, 38, and Al-Amin, 35.
Separate mobile courts caught the fishermen from different places of the river.
District Fisheries Officer Asadul Baki said Executive Magistrate Md Mahbubur Rahman and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Amit Chakrabarty operated the mobile courts.
The detained fishermen were later sent to jail, he added.
