770 industrial units yet to pay wages

A total of 770 industrial units did not pay wages for March and other allowances as of Wednesday, nearly a week after the government’s deadline to pay by April 16, official data showed.
Among them, some 279 are textile and readymade garment factories, while 478 belong to different sectors except RMG and 13 are operated under BEPZA.
According to Industrial Police (IP), some 146 out of 1,915 Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) members under its jurisdiction did not pay as of Wednesday.
Some 104 out of 1,101 units registered with Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) and 29 out of 389 member mills of Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) did not make payment as of Wednesday in six industrial belts under the IP jurisdiction.
A total of 364 factories under Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) and some 3,931 non-RMG factories are under the jurisdiction of IP.
BGMEA, however, claimed some 2,182 of its members out of total active 2,274 paid wages of March and other allowances. More than 4,500 units are registered with the trade body.
Wages payment is under process in 92 factories, it claimed.
About 2.42 million workers are employed in its active 2,274 units.
