It is widely known that universities’ ranking status depends on their research works but Bangladeshi universities are beyond in several thousand universities’ list in the world due to non-fulfillment of the criterion.
RU sources said, a total of 800 teachers out of 1,170 at Rajshahi University (RU) did not published any research paper in the last 2017-18 academic year.
Only 248 teachers carried out research, and published papers and books while 10 departments of the university yet to engage in a single research work, they added.
According to a data published in the annual reports 2017-18 of the university, 49 teachers out of 254 in Arts faculty, only one teacher out of 25 in Law faculty, 100 out of 231 in Science faculty have publications. Under the Business faculty, only 4 out of 101 teachers, 28 out of 172 in Social Science faculty, 57 out of 148 in the Life and Earth Science faculty, 30 out of 119 in the Engineering faculty and under the Fine Arts faculty only a teacher have publication out of a total 36 teachers.
There is no research of the teachers of ten departments of the university, though most of them are new departments, according to the report. Business Studies, Fine Arts and Law faculties have research crisis. Very few senior teachers of the faculties are regular in carrying out research.
Dean of the Fine Arts faculty Professor Dr Siddhartha Shankar Talukder Said, “There are two types of researches in this faculty where practical work is more significant. It would be upsetting matter if there were no publications.”
Emeritus Professor Arun Kumar Basak of Physics Department said, “The university authorities used to grant promotion considering poor research, and they do not evaluate the actual talent in appointing teachers.”
“Research crisis will have a negative impact on education in the future. If promotion is possible without research then who will do it?’, he questioned.
Pro Vice-Chancellor of the university Professor Dr Ananda Kumar Saha said, “Many teachers have carried out research but their data is somehow missing in the annual report. Specially in Science faculty, hundreds of ‘Research Papers’ are published every year.”
“Our teachers are not taking the annual report as seriously as it should be. When the university authorities seek information for the annual report, many teachers do not submit information even they have engaged in research,” he further said.
