BEA opines: 75pc foreign loan being swallowed by pol elements

Bangladesh Economic Association (BEA) President Professor Dr Abul Barakat on Saturday said, 75 per cent of foreign loan and donations are being looted by some economic and political elements.
“Rich men are mostly involved in looting. That is why they are becoming millionaires day by day. On the other hand, the poor men are becoming poorer due to exploitation by the rich,” he said.
Professor Barakat said this at a seminar titled “Poverty-Discrimination-Disparity in Bangladesh: To investigate the theory of combined Economy and Politic” held at Nabab Nawab Ali Senate Bhaban Auditorium. Bangladesh Economic Association organised the seminar.
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique was present as the chief guest while Director of Dhaka School of Economics Dr. Kazi Kholiquzzaman was in the chair.
Former Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank Khandaker Ibrahim Khaled and Professor Moazzem Hossain Khan delivered speech on the occasion.
Janata Bank Limited Chairman Professor Barkat said, actually they are poverty-stricken who are deprived of constitutional rights. Sixty-six percent people are ultra poor. 31.3 percent are members of middle income group and only 2.7 percent are rich, he said.
“About the madrasah education, he said that most of the madrasa students are jobless. One out of three is madrasa student in the country. Of them, about 73 percent are Qawmi madrasah students. One thousand and four hundred crore taka are spent for this education annually. It is a major hindrance in developing the country,” he said.
