RU Correspondent :
Seventy-five seats out of the 110 at Rajshahi University’s Arabic department are vacant under the academic session 2013-14 as the department could not find eligible students as per the new regulations in the admission procedure.
This year, the department decided to admit only those with madrasah background (Dakhil and Alim).
The authorities also added written test after passing MCQ test to the admission procedures.
A total of 897 students passed the MCQ test, held on January 22, for admission to the department.
However, only 270 applicants appeared in written test as the department decided to admit only madrasah students.
On February 24, out of the 110 selected students, only 32 took admission. The department then decided to decrease the pass mark to admit the students on the waiting list, but ultimately only 35 students were admitted.
Prof Abdul Hai Talukdar, dean of the arts faculty, which runs the department, admitted that they had made a mistake by including the written test and requested RU central authorities to take steps to fill the seats.
RU Vice Chancellor Prof Muhammad Mizanuddin said, “The faculty took the decision to include the written test even though we were against it.”
He further said the faculty should have admitted students based on the results of the MCQ test.
