First 15-day of ban period against netting hilsa: 749 fishermen jailed, Tk 19.38 lakh fined, 63.38 lakh meters of net burnt in Barishal division

Fisheries Department with the help of Coast Guard, River Police, and Rapid Action Battalion(RAB) operated 1566 drives and operated 716 mobile courts against netting hilsa defying government imposed ban from different rivers in Barishal division from October 9.
During the drives 749 fishermen were awarded different terms of imprisonment, while 874 cases lodged and Tk 19 lakhs 31 thousand 200 realised as fine, said Azizul Haque, deputy director, department of fisheries in Barishal division.
Around 63.38 lakh meters of current nets, 12.29 metric tons of hilsa fishes were also seized during the drives on different rivers of the division including Mehendiganj, Bhola and Patuakhali areas.
The seized current nets were burnt and the fishes were distributed among poor people, said Bimal Chandra Das district fisheries officer (DFO/ hilsa) in Barishal.
This year numbers of drives, operation of mobile courts increased from previous year, because fisheries department and law enforcers were more sincere and active than any period, he added.
Mentionable government imposed a 22-day ban on catching, selling, storing and transporting Hilsa from October 9 to 30, to ensure safe spawning of the national fish during its peak breeding period.
Officials from the Ministry of Fisheries, River Police, RAB and local administrations are conducting drives across the ban-areas of the country.
On the other hand fisheries department told 2, 27943 fishermen received identity card and most of them received 20 kg rice as a compensation for the ban period.
We sent copy of the order of the ministry and list of fishermen to local UNO distributing the allotted rice to fishermen for the ban period, said Azizul Haque deputy director, department of fisheries in Barishal division.
Israil Pandit, president Khudro Matsojibi Semite, Barishal Sadar Upazila said in Barishal Sadar Upazila, most of the fishermen yet not received any rice for the current ban period.
37 fishermen arrested in Manikganj
Manikganj Correspondent adds: A total of 37 fishermen, who resorted to Hilsa catching defying the government ban on catching mother Hilsa at different points, were arrested on Wednesday in the rivers Padma and Jamuna of the district.
The drives led by S M Ferdous, Deputy Commissioner of Manikganj, started around 3 am and continued up to morning.
Dr. Moniruzzaman, District Fisheries Officer, AKM Firoj Mahmud, UNO, Shibalaya, and Sabrina Sharmin, UNO, Daulatpur, were present.
