The police detained 74 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Dhaka College unit from different dormitories of Dhaka College in the small hours of Sunday. They were detained when they were preparing for a clash equipped with arms.
Of them, nine leaders and activists were sent to court and others were released, said Sub-Inspector of New Market Police Station Rezaul Karim.
The nine leaders and activists have been identified as Amin Ahmed Chowdhury Rumel, Md Rubel, Sohel Rana, ABM Mazharul Alam, Harun-or-Rashid, Rezaul Kabir Ripon, Al Amin, Noyon Kumar Pal and Hasanuzzaman.
The court issued bail every to all those detained except Amin Ahmed Chowdhury Rumel.
The committee of BCL, Dhaka College unit, was dissolved as a gunfight took place between groups of president and general secretary of the college unit recently. After dissolution the committee many BCL leaders and activists from both central and college unit were trying to establish their supremacy on the campus.
The police detained the BCL boys when college unit former Publicity Secretary Sohel Rana group and Sagar Shaha group were preparing to take control of the college in the wee hours of Sunday. The students informed the college authorities and sought police help. The New Market Police Station raided the dormitories of the college at about 2am. They detained 74 BCL leaders and activists and recovered some indigenous weapons.
Sub-Inspector of New Market Police Station Rezaul Karim said that a case was lodged with the New Market Thana Station in this regard. “The police released 65 students and sent nine to the court,” he said.
BCL President HM Badiuzzaman Sohag told The New Nation that they dissolved the Dhaka College unit committee and expelled many of the top leaders.
