Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard rescued 72 people from a trawler near St Martin’s Island in Teknaf Upazila of Cox’s Bazar while they were being trafficked to Malaysia.
They were rescued from the trawler some five kilometers off St Martin’s Island on the southeast Bay of Bengal at around 12:30pm on Saturday. The Coast Guard personnel also seized the trawler.
Lt Kazi Harun-or Rashid, Station Commander of Coast Guard in Saint Martin Island, said among the rescued were four women.
The detainees were handed over to the Teknaf Police Station, he added.
