Police, in separate drives, arrested 72 persons, including one BNP leader, from different areas of the district in last 24 hours till yesterday morning.
The police said the 72 persons were picked up from different areas of the district on various charges.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chirirbandar Police Station Anisur Rahman said, receiving secret information police conducted raid at Amtali Bazaar area early today and arrested BNP leader Principal Md Rezaul Karim, assistant organizing secretary of Chirirbandar Upazila BNP.
Police sources said several cases are pending against the arrested persons with different police stations of the district.
