70th UNGA gets underway

The 70th United Nations General Assembly formally got underway at its headquarters in New York on Monday morning (local time) with the theme of ‘The UN at 70 – a new commitment to action’.
The opening session began with the introductory speech of President of the 70th UNGA Mogens Lykketoft who emphasised ensuring that all actors move swiftly to deliver on the promises being made for sustainable development.
The UNGA new President said an ambitious and universal climate agreement is an absolute must and the first real test of the world community’s
 ability to deliver the necessary policy tools for sustainable development.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina along with other heads of states and governments of the member states attended the opening ceremony.
Joining the opening session, US President Barack Obama told the UN that supporting development is not an act of “charity” but rather an investment in the world’s common future.
Presidents of China, Brazil and Poland also delivered their speech in the session. The Secretary General of the UN Ban Ki-moon presented reports of the world body before the assembly.
Earlier, the UN Secretary General arranged a welcome reception for the world leaders at the West Foyer Indonesian Lounge at the Headquarters of the World Body in the morning (local time).
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina joined the reception along with other heads of states and governments of the 193 members of the organisation.
