At least 70 shanties were gutted in a fire that broke out in a slum near Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road in Fatullah union of Narayanganj Sadar upazila early Friday.
Seven fire units from Mondolpara, Hajiganj and Adamji fire stations rushed to the spot and doused the fire after trying for an hour.
Neither the firefighters nor the locals were able to find the source of the fire.
The locals and witnesses said that the fire started suddenly and spread across the slum, covering the whole area with smoke.
The Dhaka-Narayanganj highway was also blocked as people gathered thereon, causing suffering to the highway passengers.
Deputy Assistant Director of Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, Abdullah Al Arefin said: “No casualties were reported. We shall assess the total damage after investigation.
