Ghodaimari Primary School was established in 1993 in Rowmari upazila of Kurigram district,. But there is no classroom in the school. Only five teachers take classes of about 300 students under the open sky.
Like Ghodaimari Primary School, at least 70 percent primary schools are facing severe classroom crisis hampering academic atmosphere of the schools, a statistics of Primary and Mass Education Ministry sources said.
A classroom is a must for 40 students. But 28.7 percent primary schools only have fulfilled the condition, the statistics said.
“The number of students at primary level is increasing day by day. But the number of the classrooms does not increase. It is one of the reasons of classroom crisis,” it said.
The statistics found that at least 14 percent primary schools were damaged due to river erosion and other natural disaster. Those schools were announced abandoned later, but there was no initiative to repair the schools for starting classes. This is another prime cause behind the classroom crisis.
Chapali Government Primary School is situated in Kaligang Upazila of Jhenaidah district. A total of 139 students are studying here. The school building was announced abandoned by the Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED) and has not yet been repaired.
Yet, the classes are being taken in the vulnerable school.
The Chapali Government Primary School authorities said they applied for several times to repair and build another school building. But neither the ministry nor the local government responded to their applications.
“We know that the school building is perilous. An accident can occur any time. But we are compelled to take classes,” they said.
Only 29.3 percent schools have sanitations for girl students and safe drinking water, the statistics said.
Director General of Directorate of Primary Education (DPE) Md Alamgir admitted the matter and said, there is no scope to hide the real scenario.
“We are trying to reduce the classroom crisis The DPE has already introduced double shift class system. We work for ensuring the students’ presence in the school. Now we are working for the students’ facilities, to reduce classroom crisis,” Director General said.
He also hoped that the government would allocate sufficient money with a view to repairing and constructing new buildings across the country.
