Speakers at a programme said the country’s GDP rate can be raised by 1.7% more if disabled people get employment facilities.
About 60 to 70 lakh disabled people are unemployed now. If they are employed, they can contribute to the country’s economy, raising the GDP rate, they said while addressing the function.
Bangladesh Visually Impaired People’s Society (BVIPS), with the support of Sightsavers and European Union, organised the policy dialogue on ‘Disability and Employment’ on Saturday at the Daily Star Bhaban in the city.
Former Law Minister Abdul Matin Khasru, MP, attended as the chief guest at the programme with Advocate Mosharraf Hossain Majumder, President of BVIPS, in the chair.
AHM Noman Khan, Executive Director of Centre for Disability in Development, Sushanto Kumar Pramanik, Joint Secretary of Social Welfare Ministry, AKM Fazlul Haque, Joint Secretary of Labour and Employment Ministry, Rifat Shahpar Khan, Country Manager of Sightsavers Bangladesh, Mohammad Saidul Haque, General Secretary of BVIPS, and others spoke at the function.
Speaking on the occasion, the speakers called upon all concerned to ensure employment opportunities for the persons with disabilities by eradicating all the obstacles.
According to a report of World Health Organization (WHO), there are about two crore persons with disabilities in Bangladesh.
