At least eight fishermen sustained bullet injuries when pirates opened fire on them in the Bay of Bengal, some 50 kilometres off Rangabali upazila of Patuakhali district, on Sunday night.
The injured were identified as: Nurul Islam, Kabir Howlader, Sumon Hossain, Khokon, Saidul Islam, Forkan Hossain, Md Liton and Litu. Some of them hailed from Patharghata and some from Sadar upazila of Barguna district, Coost Guard officials said.
Patharghata Coast Guard Contingent Commander Habibur Rahman said that a gang of 25 to 30 robbers attacked seven fishing trawlers in a bid to commit robbery at Sonarchar area of Patuakhali district around 10:00pm.
Barguna Trawler Malik Samity President Golam Mostafa Chowdhury said that seven trawlers-FV Mohsin Awlia- 1, 2, 3, 4, FV Shamim, FV Allardan and FV Shadhin-were attacked by the robbers at night.
The bandits also looted Hilsha fish, fuel, cash, mobile phones and other valuables from the fishermen at gun point, he added.
At one stage, the fishermen forcibly drowned three of their vessels to escape the attack.
Later, failing to commit robbery in all boats, the gang opened fire on the fishermen, leaving them critically injured.
The injured men were taken to the Patharghata Upazila Health Complex in Barguna in a critical condition, the Coast Guard official said.
A case was filed with the Patharghata Police Station in this connection, he said. No one, however, was reportedly arrested in the case, he added.
