A Dhaka court yesterday (Monday) awarded seven convicts death sentence for killing Swechchhasebak League leader Monir Uddin Monu alias Monu Haji of Mirpur Ward 12.
Judge ABM Nizamul Hoque of Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 of Dhaka handed down the verdict on Monday afternoon in presence of convicts- Mahmudur Rahman Sohel and Hasan Sarwar Dipu. Death sentenced Md Shahadat Hossain, Shafiq, Mintu, Noman Ibne Bashar and Liton Hossain are on the run. Another convict Jahanara Begum was sentenced to life-term
imprisonment with a fine of Tk 20,000 in her absence. .
Monir Uddin Monu, former Vice-President of Sechchhasebak League’s Mirpur Ward No. 12 was shot dead by terrorists on August 15, 2006, as he did not pay a ransom of Tk one crore.
Accused Masudur Rahman Tota and Nuruzzaman Lukas made confessional statements in the case admitting their involvement in the murder.
The victim’s brother Md Akbar Ali filed the case with Mirpur Model Police Station against eight accused on the date of occurrence. A total of three investigation officers investigated into the incidence and Sub-Inspector AK Nasir Ullah submitted the charge sheet of the case on October 30, 2007. The court framed charges on April 27 against the accused and recorded the depositions of 27 persons to pronounce his verdict. Advocate Taslima Yasmin Deepa conducted the case on behalf of the prosecution.
