At least seven members of a family sustained burn injuries in an explosion of a gas pipe in the city’s Kalabagan area early Saturday.
The victims have been identified as Mamtaz Begum, 55, her daughter Rozy Begum, 35, Rozy’s son Ayon Hossain, 15, daughter Bithi Akhter, 13, brother Sumon Hossain, 30, Sumon’s son Md Rabbi, 10, and wife Reshma Akhter, 25.
They were admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) in a critical condition, Fire Service officials said.
Abdul Alim, Senior Station Officer of Mohammadpur Fire Service, said that the fire originated from a gas line around 5:30am and engulfed the whole house immediately, leaving the seven people injured critically.
The explosion was caused by gas accumulated in a hole in the pipe near the house of the victim family at Lake Circus Road in the area in the morning.
“The burst was so powerful that it damaged the wall of the house and blew away the corrugated iron roof,” the fire official said.
Four firefighting units went to the spot and doused the flame, he said.
Dr Samanta Lal Sen, the Coordinator and adviser to the Burn Unit of DMCH, said: “The injured are undergoing treatment at the burn and plastic surgery unit of the hospital. All of them are in critical condition.”
