Seven of the patients, out of 15, who have been admitted to Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute with multiple burn injuries from Jhalakathi river launch fire are very critical, said the institute’s coordinator Dr Samanta Lal Sen on Monday.
Of the seven, four are receiving treatment at intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital and three are on life support.
Dr Samanta Lal Sen said 35 other burn injured were admitted to Barishal. Of them, 18 have already left the hospital.
At least 41 persons were killed when a fire engulfed a passenger launch MV Avijan-10 in the middle of river Sugandha in Jhalakathi early hours of Friday (December 24).
Besides, over 70 people suffered injuries and many of them are undergoing treatment at different hospitals.
Rapid Action Battalion members arrested Hamjalal Sheikh, one of the owners of the launch, from Dhaka’s Keraniganj following a case filed by a Marine Court in Dhaka
On Sunday, Marine Court in Dhaka issued warrants against eight people, including Hamjalal Sheikh.
Earlier, some 21 people were taken to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Friday and 16 of them were admitted to the burn institute, where four others received first aid.
The victims, who are undergoing treatment at the hospital are Tamin Hasan, 8, who suffered 30% burn injuries, Jesmine Akter, 35, 12%, Bachchu Mia, 51, 4%, Ishrat Zahan Sadia, 22, 20%, Shahinur Khatun, 45, 25%, Marufa, 48, 15%, Selim Reza, 45, 18%, Lamia, 13, 10%, Mamtaz, 70, 8%,
Mohammad Russel, 38, 18%, Bankim Majumdar, 60, 12%, Monika Rani, 40, 30%, Golam Rabbi, 20, 9%, Bikash Majumdar, 16, Khadiza, 27, 5%, and Bashir, 35, 6%.
Of the victims, Habib Khan, 45, succumbed to his injuries on Friday night.
At least 40 passengers were burned to death and 72 others were injured after a massive fire broke out in the engine room of a launch in the middle of the Sugandha River off the coast of Jhalakathi Sadar upazila.
The blaze broke out at 3am on the Barguna-bound Obhijan 10 launch carrying some 800 passengers from Dhaka and it engulfed the entire vessel within 10 minutes.
