Miscreants attacked a madrasa near the Cox’s Bazar Ukhiya Rohingya Camp on Friday early morning and left seven people dead, police said.
The deceased were identified as madrasa teacher Md Idris, 32, from camp-12; Ibrahim Hossain, 24, from camp-9; madrasa student Azizul Haque, 22, and Mohammad Amin, 32, both from camp-18. They died on the spot.
The other three deceased, who died near the health complex, are Madrasa teachers Nur Alam Halim, 45, from camp-18, and Hamidullah, 55, from camp-24 and madrasa student Nur Kaysar from camp-18.
Superintendent of Police Shihab Kaysar and Head of Armed Police Battalion-8 (APBn) told journalists that the incident took place between Rohingyas’ two factions of favor and disfavor of repatriation process.
He said that the miscreants attacked Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama Al-Islamiyah Madrasa in Balukhali’s block H-52 of Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMN) camp-18 around 4 am.
Shihab Kaysar said that the miscreants used fire arms and sharp weapons in the attack and killed four people on the spot.
Informed by camp residents, police from Moynarghona camp-12 rushed to the spot and carried the injured to nearby health facility, he said, and arrested one of the miscreants from the spot with a locally-made shooter gun, six bullets and one knife, the police officer said.
He said police were conducting a block raid on the Rohingya camps and other dwellings and installations in the area.
Meanwhile, Rafiqul Islam, Additional Police Superintendent of Cox’s Bazar district police said, police recovered the seven bodies and sent to hospital for autopsy.
He said that police are yet to discover the motive of the attack. They are trying. Sources said, the Rohingyas are divided in different factions. Some of those are in favor their repatriation process taking by the government of Bangladesh with international allies. The other groups have stood against the repatriation process.
As a result, tension between the two factions are prevailed for long. The recent killing of Rohingy leader Master Muhibbullah, was the result of such tension, sources said.
In this situation, a high-profile meeting took place on Thursday in the Home Ministry in the capital. Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen and BGB and police and other civilian officials were there.
Talking about the meeting, the Home Minister said on Thursday that they had decided to tighten security in and around the Rohingya camps to free from illegal weapons and drugs there.
Replying to another query, the Minister said that police arrested several persons in connection with Rohingya leader Muhibullah killing. He said that the motive of the killing would be clear soon.
