At least seven people were killed and 15 others injured in two separate road accidents on the Dhaka-Bagura highway under Sherpur upazila of the district on Wednesday.
Police said, six people died on the spot and 11 others injured in Ghoga Bottola area when a salt-laden truck collided head on with a Dhaka-bound passenger bus at about 11.45am.
The injured were admitted to Shahid Zia Medical College and Hospital.
Inspector Yeamin Ud-Dawla of Bagura Highway Police told BSS that the accident took place at Ghoga Bottola area.
Being informed, four units of Fire Brigade and Civil Defence rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies and rescued the injured persons, he said.
Officer-in-charge of Sherpur police station Humayun Kabir said five of the six victims were identified. They were Abdul Alim, son of Abul Hossain, Rabik Islam son of Mizanur Rahman, Md Raju, son of Atiar Rahman, Saddam Hossain, son of Md Joynal Hossain and Manjurul Islam, son of Morshed Alam. All of them hailed from Jaldhaka of Nilphamari district.
Besides, youth Mridul Islam, 22, died on the spot in Mohipur area of the same upazila early on Wednesday morning when two speeding trucks collided head on. Four passengers of both vehicles were also injured in the accident, said Humayun Kabir, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sherpur Police Station.
Police seized all the vehicles and sent the bodies to Shahid Zia Medical College and Hospital morgue for autopsy. Two separate cases were lodged with Sherpur Police Station in these connections.
