UNB, Khagrachhari :
At least seven people were injured in a clash between two groups of Pahari and Bangalee people over the murder of Sabita Chakma at Komolchhari in Sadar upazila on Tuesday.
The injured – Ananda, Ashraful, Arnab, Jahangir, Saidur, Shamim and Pandok– hail from Komolchhari and Bhuachhari of the upazila.
Witnesses said activists of Parbatya Bangalee Chhatra Parishad (Hill Tracts Bengali Students’ Council) were chanting allegedly offensive slogans on their way back to Bhuachhari ending a human chain programme at Shapla Chattar in the district town in the morning. The human chain programme was held demanding proper investigation into the murder as the Paharis alleged that a Bangalee raped a housewife, Sabita Chakma and killed her on February 15.
But the postmortem report said that she had been chopped to death.
The clash ensued when local Pahari (hill) people protested the slogans chanted by the Parbatya Bangalee Chhatra Parishad activists at noon.
At one stage, both groups, with bamboo sticks and brick chips, attacked one another, leaving seven people injured on both sides. On information, police, army and BGB personnel rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
The injured were admitted to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital.
