UNB, Chittagong :
Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men clashed with police as they tried to stop the construction work of a swimming pool in Chittagong outer stadium in the city on Tuesday, leaving seven people injured.
Police and locals said a group of BCL leaders and activists, loyal to city Awami League President ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, submitted a memorandum to the authorities concerned on April 16 seeking cancellation of the construction of the swimming pool claiming it would hamper plays.
As the authorities concerned continued the construction work, the BCL men tried to enter the stadium in the afternoon in their bid to stop the work. The clash took place as police prevented them from entering the construction site. A chase and counter-chase took place between them as the BCL activists threw brick chips at the law enforcers, leaving seven people, including two policemen, injured.
Police also fired blank shots and lobbed teargas shells to bring the situation under control.
Later, the BCL men blocked several roads, including Kazir Deori Road, Azkor Dighi and Love Lane intersection, placing logs, and damaged several vehicles.
City unit BCL general secretary Nurul Azam Rony said they arranged a protest programme to preserve the playground but police attacked them illegally. He also claimed that 5-6 BCL activists were injured in police firing.
