A Dhaka court on Wednesday sentenced seven people to life term rigorous imprisonment (RI) and another to three years for killing Hasib Humayun Prince, a third year honours student of Jagannath University, in 2008.
The judge Md Nuruzzaman of Dhaka’s Second Speedy Trial Tribunal also fined the seven convicts Tk 20,000 each, in default they will suffer one year more in the prison. Another convict was awarded three years’ RI with a fine of Tk 5,000 in default to suffer one month more in prison.
The convicts are Kamal Hossain Jewel, Miraz (fugitive), Ashraful Newaz, Mahmud Mishu, Mostafa Kamal Roman, Sharif Ahmed and Mahmud Hasan Rony. Convict Rizia Begum was awarded three years’ imprisonment with a fine of Tk 5,000.
According to the prosecution, Prince was killed by his maternal uncle Kamal Hossain Jewel and his cohorts at Borpa village in Narayanganj on October 5, 2008 as he opposed the extra-marital affairs of his uncle.
Prince’s father Kanchan Hossain Talukdar filed a murder case with the Police Station in this connection.
Later, police submitted charge sheet accusing the eight, with a Narayanganj Court on August 5, 2010.
The case was later transferred to Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal-2 in 2011.
After examining the witnesses and records, the Speedy Trial Tribunal-2 Judge Md Nuruzzaman handed down the verdict. The court recorded the depositions of 29 witnesses out of 41 witnesses.
