Detective Branch of the police arrested seven suspected extortionists and recovered Tk 30,000 from their possessions raiding an office at Prembagh village under Abhaynagar upazila in Jashore at around 9:15pm on Sunday, said Maruf Ahmed, officer in-charge, DB, Jashore. The DB official told Newsmen that they arrested Syed Mostafizur Rahman Rana, 40, assistant teacher, Banogram Secondary School, who used to introduce himself as president of Bangabandhu Smriti Parishad, Azad Rahman, 42, Syed Wahidul Islam Mintu, 40, Md Pintu, 35, Ziar Mollah, 35 and Al Amin Hossain, 23, all of Prembagh village under Abhaynagar upazila in Jashore and Habibur Rahman, 58, of Char Baira village under Gopalganj sadar upazila from Prembagh on the night. The police also recovered Tk 30,000 which was extorted from Amir Hossain Emon, manager, Alvee Traders of Narayangonj. Alvee Traders was supplying fuel to Toma Construction for a long.
‘The fuel tankers of the company were compelled to give a good amount of money on the way as extortions at Prembagh,’ the DB OC added.
They used the unauthorised office of Bangabandhu Smriti Parishad for extortion. ( Note-police said sitting the office they did the acts without using the name of the parishad). Police carried out drive as the gang members demanded Tk 1, 60,000 as ransom to the manager of Alvee Traders after confining the driver and an employee along with a fuel tanker on February 16.
