Mobile courts on Monday fined eight brick kilns Tk 5 lakh in Chandpur district for running those violating environmental rules.
During the drives, a mobile court also shut ‘Nazir Ahmed Bricks’ for not having legal documents, said Deputy Commissioner’s office on Tuesday.
Several mobile courts, led by Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNO), Assistant Commissioners (Land) and Executive Magistrates conducted the drives on Monday.
In Chandpur Sadar, AMS Bricks was fined Tk 2 lakh, CSB Bricks in Matlab South Tk 50,000, Shahporan Bricks Tk 70,000, KSB Bricks Tk 40,000 , Matubbor Jomadar Bricks in Haimchar Tk 30,000, Gausul Ajom Bricks in Kachua was fined Tk 50,000, Faridganj’s Mahmub Bricks Tk 50,000 and Mahela Bricks in Shahrasti was fined Tk 10,000.
Drives against illegal brick kilns will continue, it said.
Earlier on Monday, The High Court directed to shut down all the brick kilns operating without any license across Dinajpur and Moulvibazar district within seven days.
The court also directed the Deputy Commissioners of the districts and director of the Environment Department to submit a list of these illegal kilns within the next six weeks in affidavit format.
A report by the Department of Environment (DoE) and the World Bank published in March 2020, on the sources of air pollution in Bangladesh identified three main culprits – brick kilns, fumes from vehicles and dust from construction sites.
