7.45 lakh families get rice at Tk 10 per kg in Rajshahi, Joypurhat

More than 7.13 lakh extreme poor families in all eight districts under Rajshahi division have started getting the rice at a rate of Tk 10 per kilogram (kg) for the last couple of weeks.
The selected card holders will get 30 kilograms of rice in every month through village ration dealers at a rate of Tk 10 per kg under the ‘Food Friendly Programme for the Ultra Poor.’
Requisite number of village ration dealers has already been appointed at all unions in the division to sell the rice, said Suja Alam, District Controller of Food in Rajshahi, while talking to BSS here on Monday.
The government wants to provide food support to the extreme poor families during the crisis period so that they do not suffer for food crisis. At the same time, the government’s election pledge to decrease rice price at Tk 10 per kg can be fulfilled with the decision, he added.
For every 500 families, a village ration dealer has been appointed for distributing the rice smoothly while the widows and physically challenged people will get priority in the programme.
The food controller also said the rice selling programme at Tk 10 per kg will continue for five months which includes the months of September, October, November and March to April in each year. The months have been selected in view of non-availability of work for the day-labourers, he added.
He also, however, vowed to take punitive measures against those who will engage in any irregularities during the programme.
Local parliament members, however, have already inaugurated the rice distribution programme at the rate of Tk. 10 per kg at their respective areas in separate functions.
Earlier, the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the programme at Chilmari in Kurigram district to make rice available to the poor people at a rate of Tk 10 per kilogram to facilitate them with availability of the food.
Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi division Munir Hossain welcomed the decision of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for providing poor families across the country with ration card under social safety net scheme.
BSS from Joypurhat adds: Selling of rice under ration to the poor at Taka 10 per kg began on Tuesday in all five upazilas of the district.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Aminul Islam formally inaugurated the rice selling programme at Bambu union under sadar upazila of the district.
Vice-president of Zila Awami League and Bambu UP chairman Molla Shamsul Islam, member of Zila Awami League Mizanur Rahman and district food controller Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury, among others, were present on the occasion.
Upazila food department sources said under the programme 36,387 card holders will get 30-kg rice in a month.
Beneficiaries have expressed their gratitude to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for launching the programme.
