Utility service: 67pc people pay bribe: TIB

The Executive Director of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Dr. Iftekharuzzaman on Sunday said that around 67 percent people have to pay bribe for taking service in different sectors.
He said this while addressing a view exchange meeting at Gazipur Zila Parishad titled ‘Anti-Corruption Social Movement: Prospects and Challenges’, on the occasion of the International Anti-Corruption Day.
Dr. Iftekharuzzaman said, a survey found that 67 percent of the people were forced to bribe the service providers and 70 percent of those who did it say there is no other way to get the service.
Dr. Iftekharuzzaman said also, if corruption can be controlled at the middle level, the economic growth is possible to double digit, It is difficult, but is not impossible to stop the corruption.
He also said, to prevent corruption, there must be political will. If the leaders of the main political parties abhor corruption, it will be possible to free the country from corruption within the next 10 years. No country could be corrupt without political will.
Corruption is a punishable crime. If you bring the guilty to trial, corruption will be reduced considerably. Another powerful factor to reduce corruption is to create a social movement, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman said.
President of Sacheton Nagorik Committee (SANAK), Gazipur, Professor Ayesh Uddin presided over the meeting which was also addressed by the Deputy Commissioner of Gazipur. Dewan Muhammad Humayun Kabir, Gazipur Zila Parishad’s Chief Executive Mahbub Alam, Additional Superintendent of Police of Gazipur Md. Rasel Sheikh, Gazipur LGED Executive Engineer Md.
