67 pc children suffer from respiratory problems’

Speakers including medical scientists, physicians and health officials here on Saturday said country’s 67 percent children under five years are suffering from various respiratory problems.
Lack of proper diagnosis, trained manpower and separate pulmonology department at the medical colleges cause serious setback to treatment of the child respiratory illness including pneumonia, bronchiolitis, asthma and tuberculosis, they said.
They were addressing the 4th Child Pulmocon 2015 conference at the Krishibid Institution, Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Paediatrics Pulmonology Forum (BPPF) organized the conference with Professor ARM Lutful Kabir, head of paediatrics of Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital in the chair.
They said setting up pulmonology department, well-trained manpower, necessary modern medical equipment and supply of drugs at the
medical colleges are essential for proper treatment of the disease.
Establishment of Paediatrics Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is also vital for survival of the children affected with acute bronchiolitis and other respiratory problems.
National Professors and noted child specialists including Professor MR Khan, Director-General of BIRDEM Professor Nazmun Nahar, Professor Nurul Islam and M A Abid Hossen Mollah, among others, attended the conference.
More than 400 child specialists from home and abroad participated in the conference.
