67 battery-run auto-rickshaws seized on first day of drive

A joint-drive to remove battery-run rickshaws from Chittagong city was launched yesterday As part of the move, the police seized 67 battery-run rickshaws from the city’s different spots. Chittagong district administration, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority and Chittagong City Corporation accompanied them during the drive.
 Faruk Ahmed, deputy commissioner (Traffic) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), said “We conducted the drives at 26 points yesterday from 7am with the help of five magistrates of the district administration and CCC”.
BRTA officials were also present, during the drive; he said adding that the drives will continue.
“Whenever we find the illegal rickshaws, they will get seized,” he assured, claiming that the drives will bring little sufferings to the city dwellers as there are sufficient number of paddle rickshaws there.
However, visiting several stops it was noticed that few rickshaws went into operation since the drives started in the morning.
