Bangladesh Bank statistics showed that in the last eight years, the deposit in the accounts of the millionaires was 41.95 percent of the total deposits. But eight years ago, the percentage of deposits in the millionaire accounts was 30 percent of the total deposits.
According to economists, rise of the number of small depositors means that economic discrimination has increased in the country. The rich are getting richer. On the other hand, poor people are becoming poorer. To eradicate this discrimination, poverty reduction programme will have to be adopted more, they opined.
According to BB statistics, till last December, the total depositors’ account in the banking sector was eight crore 14 lakh 26 thousand 946. In contrast, there are deposits of Tk 8 lakh 99 thousand 414 crore.
Analysts say the small depositors are unable to adjust their expenditure with their income. The price of all goods has increased abnormally. Transportation costs, the price of electricity and household rent have increased.
The cost of living has increased. As a result, people ration their necessary requirements. They cannot think of saving money with their income.
