66 thousand tons onion imported to reduce onion crisis

Various non-government organizations have got permission to import (IP) 65,960 metric tons of onion from Egypt, China, Pakistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan to reduce the onion supply crisis. Of these, the import of 58,188 tons from Egypt, 4,522 tons from China, 2,200 tons from Pakistan, 820 tons from Turkey, and 200 tons of onion are imported from Uzbekistan.
The import of these onions has been approved from October 12 to November 7, said Deputy Director of the Chattogram Seaport Centers for Disease Plants Md Asaduzzaman Bulbul.He said the S Alam group is importing the most onions.
The group will bring 11,000 tons of Egyptian onion in five IPs from Egypt in the name of Messrs Sonali Traders.Chattogram’s Monir Enterprise is importing 1,000 tons and Wasif Trading is bringing 500 tons of onion from China.
Setara Trading in Chattogram is importing 600 tons and Noor Enterprise in Satkhira bringing 500 tons of onions from Pakistan. Southern trade from Chattogram is importing 4 tons of onions from Egypt.
Already, 4,815 tons of onion has entered the market through Chattogram seaport, the official said. Of these, 1,446 tons from Egypt, 847 tons from China, 1,228 tons from Myanmar, 182 tons from Turkey and 112 tons of onion from UAE.
On the other hand, onion prices in the wholesale market of Khatunganj had a slight upward trend as the goods releasing was closed due to the cyclone Bulbul.
However, to reduce the onion supply crisis, big sized onions from various countries including Egypt are playing a vital role. 20kg sacks of these onions are available in the market. One to five onions makes one kg. Prices are much lower than Indian onions.
However, the port secretary Omar Farooq told that the operational activities of the port were stopped for some time due to the cyclone. Operational activities have been in full swing since Sunday.
Onion containers are being given priority. So that onions can reach the market in the fastest time.
