66 jailed for violating ban on hilsa fishing

Some 66 fishermen have been jailed for different terms and fined for catching hilsa in Bhola, Chandpur, Laxmipur, Munshiganj and Dhaka districts on Sunday and Monday defying a ban.
In Bhola, a mobile court here on Monday morning jailed 28 fishermen and fined three others on charge of fishing hilsa from the Meghna River violating the ban.
In Laxmipur, a mobile court on Sunday sentenced eight fishermen to one year imprisonment for violating the ban in Meghna River of Borokheri area in Ramgati upazila.
In Munshiganj, six fishermen, who were arrested along with 50,000 foot current nets from the Meghna and Dhaleshwari rivers, were sentenced to different jail terms by a mobile court here on Monday.
The mobile court, led by UNO Saraban Tahura, fined them Tk 1,000 each. In Keraniganj of Dhaka, a mobile court here on Monday sent nine fishermen to jail for catching fish with the current nets from Padma River in Dohar upazila, violating the government’s ban on hilsha fishing.
In Chandpur, two mobile courts on Monday sentenced seven fishermen to one year imprisonment for catching mother hilsas in the Meghna River.
Besides, eight more fishermen were jailed on Sunday for violating the hilsa ban.
