As many as 657 river-eroded families of five unions under Sadar upazila of the district got cash assistance from the government on Thursday.
The cash assistance, received from the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, was distributed as the gift of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the families of Sadar upazila for mitigating their sufferings caused by river erosion.
In this regard, a cheque distribution function was held at the auditorium of Upazila Parishad (UP) of the town here with Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shariful Alam in the chair.
Whip of the Jatiya Sangshad and local lawmaker Mahabub Ara Begum Gini disbursed the cheques amounting to Taka 81 lakh to the selected beneficiaries as the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, she said the present government is so much cordial and sincere to mitigate the sufferings and sorrows of the river erosion affected families across the country. Gini also urged the beneficiaries to use the money properly.
Upazila Chairman Shah Sarwar Kabir, Vice-chairman Taslima Akhter Smrity, Upazila Project Implementation Officer Anisur Rahman and political leaders including General Secretary of Upazila Awami League Mridul Mostafi Jhantu were present, among others, on the occasion.
